The valley on the west side of my hometown, Mt. Shasta in far northern California, contains a rich wetlands of marshes. It is the headwaters of California’s great Sacramento River and an important ecosystem on the Pacific Flyway for migrating waterfowl.
This small woodland lake lies at the edge of town, the location of a nature study area and a popular fishing hole for kids. The old watergate, installed in the 1920’s, regulates the water level. I love the deep patina of rust on the historic pipe.
