Lake Te Anau is in the southwest corner of the South Island of New Zealand. The view westward towards the rugged mountains of Fiordland is perhaps the lake’s most spectacular aspect. The Clinton River flows into the lake down a narrow valley between soaring peaks. Here you’ll discover the trailhead for the Milford Track, one of the world’s “greatest walks,” four days and 34 miles of spectacular scenery (and effort).
I painted this watercolor from Te Anau Lodge a day before starting on the famous hike. The ever-present rain clouds lifted and sunshine sparkled on every surface.
This is truly the region of the perpendicular.
