Cowboy Corral Green River Utah

Legend has it that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hid out in these red rock canyons. It’s a land of distant buttes, rolling sagebrush flats, narrow desert slot canyons in Utah’s back country. Tucked into brush on the bluff is an old corral, pine poles carved into rugged sculptures by wind and sun.

We camped in a cottonwood grove on our third day in the Desolation Canyon section of the Green River. The flat was called Opposite McPherson Ranch, named for nearby abandoned buildings and ranch equipment from the first cowboy settlers. I discovered the old corral on a hike, and immediately set up to paint. The watercolor painting was created entirely on location… en plein aire.
