Castle Lake lies 7 miles above the town of Mt. Shasta. The steep cliffs on the south side provide a panoramic view. This painting shows the view northward, with Black Butte and Oregon’s Mount Mclaughlin in the distance.
Castle Lake has been studied for over 50 years by UC Davis at the Castle Lake Limnology Lab. The floating research raft seen in the painting is a popular swimming destination and sunbathing platform on hot summer days.
